How does SONICWAVE™ treat erectile dysfunction?

SONICWAVE™ therapy physically jolts the cells of the penis stimulating the growth of blood vessels and nerves.

SONICWAVE™ therapy is comprised of a suite of therapies that are tailored to the patient’s specific medical and psychological state. The main therapy uses focused “low intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy” (LI-ESWT) to stimulate cell growth.

SONICWAVE™ is “curative”, unlike drugs that only deal with symptoms. It can be thought of as follows. In its flaccid state the tissues of the penis are hypoxic, that is they have an inadequate supply of oxygen and nutrients. If the penis does not become erect periodically, during sleep or through sexual stimulation the blood vessels shrink. SONICWAVE™ therapy physically jolts the cells of the penis causing them to act as though they are injured which stimulates angiogenesis (growth of blood vessels) and neurogenesis (growth of nerves).

Once it becomes possible for the penis to become erect it should be stimulated regularly – if possible daily, whether or not accompanied by ejaculation. Lifestyle factors that contributed to the onset of erectile dysfunction should be changed. Most importantly the patient should exercise every day. If their waist size is larger than 40” they should take steps to reduce it. Counselling to help with these lifestyle factors is key to curing erectile challenges.

Additionally, the psychological factors that contributed to the onset of erectile dysfunction should be investigated and treated.

SONICWAVE™ therapy uses focused shock waves rather than radial shock waves that are often used in physiotherapy. The protocols for how the device is calibrated and focused is critical to the successful treatment of erectile dysfunction. Clinics that use SONICWAVE™ have to undergo specialized training and the therapy is only administered with the oversight of a medical doctor.
